Our Owners

 

Pictured are the owners of Sonshine Academy with their four children and daughter-in-law: {listed left to right} Rosemary(upside-down,) Ashley, Erik, Sarah Jo, Scott, Elsie Rose, and Zach.   Scott and Elsie Rose Wright were married in 1982 and their children are truly the first Sonshine family. All were present at the beginnings of Sonshine Academy in the fall of 1991 except Sarah Jo who was born in 1994.

Scott is the President of Sonshine Academy and oversees the Gymnastics Program. He graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in Education (Math and Sociology) from Houston Baptist University in 1984. Scott has over 35 years experience in the sport of gymnastics as a gymnast, girls and boys coach, men's judge, and business owner. If asked what his favorite job is his quick response is, "As much as I love gymnastics being a husband and dad is my most favorite."

GYMNASTICS BACKGROUND AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

High School: Member and Captain of state championship gymnastics team in 1978 and 1979. High School All-American Team, 1979. All-State on all 6 events and all around, 1978. All-American on Rings and Horizontal Bar, 1978. Member of the Flippers Gymnastics Team from age 11 to age 17. Qualified and competed in USGF age group nationals 1975 through 1979.

College: Four Year Letterman at Houston Baptist University. Member of the 1982 team which placed tenth at the NCAA finals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Record holder on horizontal bar with 9.90 at Western Athletic Conference Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Voted Most Valuable Gymnast by team members in 1983. 1983 Team Captain. Best Events: Rings and Horizontal Bar.

Post College: Involved in gymnastics as a coach, judge, business owner and administrator. Appointed 1989 - 1990 United States Gymnastics Federation (USGF) Men's Gymnastics judging director for the state of Arkansas. Elected USGF Men's State Chairman for Arkansas (1989 - 1992). USGF Safety Certified 1988. American Coaching Effectiveness Program (ACEP) certified 1984, Former Nationally Rated Men's Gymnastics Judge, current USA Gymnastics Safety Certifier, completed USA Gymnastics Professional Development Program (PDP) Levels 1 and 2, current PDP Level 1 instructor, certified USA Gymnastics women's skill evaluator, certified USA Gymnastics Meet Director, Instructor of Junior Olympic Men's Judging, and Meet Director for the 1995 Men's Regional Gymnastics Championships. In 2006 he was the recipient of the Robert Cowan Award.

Elsie Rose manages the Office and oversees the Dance and Cheerleading Programs. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in Education (Physical Education and Political Science) from Houston Baptist University in 1985. She is certified to teach in Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Elsie Rose has over 30 years of experience as an athlete, coach, teacher, and business owner. Her degree in Physical Education is a great asset with the physical fitness, motivation, coaching technique, and teaching aspects of the business. However, her most valuable experience comes from being the mother of four children. Understanding the needs and challenges of the families who bring their children to Sonshine Academy helps bring a very valuable perspective to the program.
